How to Plan a Kitchen Renovation Without the Stress

The kitchen is the most-used room in most homes, which is exactly why a renovation there feels so disruptive. The good news: nearly every headache we see on kitchen projects traces back to decisions that were skipped during planning. A little structure up front saves weeks of frustration later.

Start with function, not finishes. Before you fall in love with a cabinet colour or a countertop slab, map out how you actually use the space. Where do groceries land when you walk in? Is the dishwasher next to the sink? Do two people cook at once? A layout that fits your routine will outlast any trend, and changing walls or plumbing later is far more expensive than choosing a different paint colour.

Set a realistic budget with a contingency. A good rule of thumb is to hold back 10–15% of your budget for the surprises hiding behind the walls — outdated wiring, plumbing that isn't to code, or subfloor damage. If you don't need it, great. If you do, you'll be glad it's there instead of on a credit card.

Order long-lead items early. Cabinets, windows, and some appliances can take weeks or months to arrive. Demolition should never start until the critical pieces are confirmed or in hand. Tearing out a kitchen and then waiting eight weeks for cabinets is the single most common — and most avoidable — scheduling mistake.

Finally, plan your temporary kitchen. Set up a microwave, kettle, and coffee maker somewhere out of the work zone, and use disposable plates for a few weeks. It sounds small, but having a functional corner for morning coffee keeps the whole household sane while the work is underway.

If you're thinking about a kitchen renovation, we're happy to walk the space with you and talk through layout, budget, and timing before you commit to anything. An estimate starts with nothing more than a conversation.
